Demystifying Your Frame Size: Understanding How Glasses Are Measured

Illustration of a woman trying on glasses in different sizes

When you’re shopping for glasses, it’s never a one-size-fits-all experience. Different people have different facial measurements, which means glasses need to come in a range of sizes to accommodate that difference. But how exactly are glasses measured? It might not be something you’ve ever really thought about before. Don’t worry – in this blog, we’ll demystify the measurements and how they work so that the next time you go into a glasses store, you can choose the right size of frames for your face confidently.

What Do Those Numbers on Your Glasses Frames Mean?

If you look at your glasses, you’ll notice that there are three numbers stamped on the inside, usually somewhere on the inner surface of the frame temples, the long stems that hold your glasses in place behind your ears. These three numbers describe the size of your glasses’ frames.

Here’s what these numbers mean:

  • Eye Size – the first number is the eye size and represents the horizontal width of the lenses. Generally, most frames range in size from 40mm to 62mm.

  • Bridge Size – the second number is the bridge size. This measures the distance between the lenses – the size of the “bridge” of the frame that is resting on your nose. Most frames have brides that range in size from 14mm to 24mm.

  • Temple Length – the third number is the temple length, measuring the length of the stems of the frame, from the hinge to the back tip of the temple. Temple sizes usually range from 120mm to 150mm.

In addition to these three numbers, you may see other numbers stamped onto the inside of the frame. These numbers indicate qualities such as the frame model or the colour of the frame.

Finding the Perfect Fit

When looking for glasses that fit perfectly, a good way to begin is by comparing them with your current pair of glasses that you’re comfortable with. You can ask an optician to help you find the measurements on the inside of your glasses and use that as a starting point for trying on frames in-store.

If you’re buying your first pair of glasses, you can simply ask an optician for assistance and they can help you find a measurement that works for you.

You should also be cautious and avoid relying solely on the numbers to find the right fit – two frames of identical sizes may fit differently due to differences in the materials and shape of the frame. Your best bet is to try them on in-store and see how they fit!
